ZIMBABWE: HBA Expel Rhinos

BLACK RHINOS have been booted out of the Harare Basketball Association while Pioneer Blazers face a similar fate.

Rhinos were expelled from the league after they failed to pay affiliation fees and did not fulfil six league matches. Pioneer Blazers have been suspended after their player, Tineyi Tinarwo, assaulted two match officials who were handling their game against Drifters at the University courts. Tinarwo has been banned from taking part in any Basketball Union of Zimbabwe activities both on and off the pitch.

HBA vice-chairman (technical) Tendai Mikuruva, who was one of the officials assaulted by Tinarwo, said the Blazers have been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing. Blazers might be booted from the association. "Just like any losing team, Blazers were saying that we were biased in favour of their opposition (Drifters). "Tinarwo misbehaved and actually the whole team was not behaving in a good manner because one can not hit a referee in any sport.

"This has also resulted in Blazers being suspended until their case is heard before the disciplinary committee." Meanwhile, the HB A will this weekend conduct trials for the team to represent the province at the annual Youth Games scheduled for Chinhoyi this year. The trials will be conducted at three different venues with the first session scheduled for Yask College in Chitungwiza tomorrow. The trials will start at 9am on Saturday before moving to Zengeza High 1 in Chitungwiza at 1.30pm the same day.The final selection will be conducted at Harare's Queen Elizabeth School on Sunday starting at 9am. HBA administrator Simon Lawson said the prospective players should bring an identification card, birth certificate or a passport showing their date of birth. "The players should have been born on or after the first day of January 1988 but not after the last day of December 1991.

"Schools should bring at least one ball so that we have enough to get the selection going," said Lawson.
