RWANDA : Sudan Withdrawals From Zone V Qualifiers

Sudan and Eritrea have pulled out of the fourth coming All Africa Games Qualifiers/ Zone V basketball championships slated for February 3-10 in Kigali, Rwanda, the International Basketball Federation (Fiba), has revealed.

The National Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) technical director, Innocent Karuhije said yesterday that Fiba had advised Rwanda to count Sudan and Eritrea out of the Kigali tournament.

"Sudan failed to secure adequate funds to take part in the event while Eritrea's sudden pull-out is still unknown," said Karuhije.
The duo's pull-out has left eleven countries including Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Djibouti and hosts Rwanda in the event.
Meanwhile, the national basketball teams continued with their preparations, warming up against selection sides from Goma (DR Congo) at the weekend.Both sides (men and women) exhibited a good show, scoring 63-32, 76-17 in the ladies' category while the registered a 76-43, 80-56 wins against visitors.
The performance boasted the teams' morale ahead of the qualifiers that throw off on February 3.
As the tournament draws closer, the teams have resorted to daily double training sessions. The ladies training sessions are held 8:00am and 3:00pm while the men have theirs at 11:00am and later at 5:00pm. Rwanda, who joined Zone V in 2005 from Zone IV after four years of pleading with Fiba, will be hosting her maiden qualifiers' event.
