NIGERIA : 4000 Schools Enter for Nestle Milo Basketball Championship

ABOUT 4000 secondary schools across the country featuring about 1,200 students and 1,000 officials are expected to participate in the 2007 Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship which enters its 9th edition this year and would run from February 24 to March 9, 2007.

For this purpose the country has been divided into six conferences namely Savannah with centre in Kano, Sahara with centre in Bauchi, Central in Ilorin, Equatorial in Yenagoa , Atlantic in Enugu and Western in Ibadan with states drawn in groups of five, six and seven.Managing Director and Chief Executive of the sponsoring company, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Mr. Klaus Wachsmuth disclosed this at a press conference to usher in the championship in Lagos yesterday with a promise that his company will "further accelerate the development of basketball in Nigeria and positively engage the energy of the youths" among other key objectives. He disclosed that registration of interested schools for the championship has commenced as he advised those who have completed their forms should submit same to their state sports council before February 23 to qualify for the Intra-state preliminaries/finals.Apart from trophies, Nestle products and branded items to be given to winners, Mr. Wachsmuth said that financial rewards will go to the overall winners in both the male and female categories. The champion schools for boys and girls will get N25,000 each while the first and second runners-up will earn N20,000 and N15,000 respectively
One of the highlights of this year's event will be "train the trainers camp" where basketball coaches will have the opportunity to learn new skills as they train the nation's future champions. Insurance cover to the tune of N100,000 for death of players and officials with N25,000 going for medical expenses.

President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Dr. Thomas Adeleke (Olaiya) also said that the federation places high premium on genuine talents discovery and therefore will not condone any act of cheating.
