Kampala City Council (KCC) men’s team will have to do without the influential Eric Malinga when they begin their pursuit for honours at the annual Africa Zone 5 Inter Cities tournament in Dar es Salaam tomorrow.

Malinga, the 2007 basketball player of the year, has decided to sit out the tournament because of work commitments. “At least I explained my situation. My hands were tied by responsibilities here and there,” Malinga, who captained Mogas Falcons to a sixth MTN-Fuba League championship last season, said.

The team of 36 (men and women) left on Saturday. His brother Henry Malinga is expected to lead the men’s team in the five-day championship. “Henry traveled today (yesterday) morning. I am sure he will beef up the team,” Eric added. Three-time league top scorer Frances Nabulobi and former MVP Flavia Oketcho are some of the star players on the women’s side, which finished third in last year’s edition in Nairobi .

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) has meanwhile accused KCC Leopards officials of tarnishing their name falsely.

KCC earlier this week claimed Fuba general secretary Tom Ocamringa and his assistant Sande Manano had a hand in the defending champions’ 44-47 loss to A-1 Challenge.

Leopards’ team manager Joy Olinga said she was unhappy about the way the duo officiated the game that saw A-1 Challenge finish the first round unbeaten last Friday at YMCA.

But Manano called Daily Monitor on Friday and said:
“What are they protesting? Well, they have managed to put my name in the press for wrong reasons but they won’t stop me from doing the right thing.” Olinga, who two years ago was handed a suspension for allegedly abusing the then Fuba organising secretary Edmund Lumu maintained that some issues have to be ironed out for the league to run properly.
