UGANDA : Omony looking to make an impact in Zone 5

By Charles Mutebi

SEYCHELLES-based Ugandan basketball star Stephen Omony says he would be delighted play in the Zone Five African Basketball Championship qualifiers in Rwanda next month.

The two-time local MVP was named in the 39-man preliminary men’s squad by governing body FUBA last week.
Omony says he would not think twice about heeding the national call provided his travel requirements are sorted out.
“I have not been contacted by anyone from FUBA but I was thrilled upon hearing that I had been included on the list of players expected to turn out for trials,” Omony remarked.
The player is the 2007 Seychelles Basketball Federation MVP who currently turns out for the PLS Hawks.

FUFA technical committee organising Secretary Joseph Manano had earlier said that the federation is still sorting out all the potential logistical requirements.
Manano clarified that Omony would not need to undergo trials.
“Omony is a player on a different (technical) level compared to our local players and may not need to be in that (final vetting) selection exercise,” Manano said.

The official had also expressed confidence that the honour of representing Uganda would prove too enticing for the Mogas Falcons great to turn down –– and he was right.
“I am ready to pick up bags and travel back to Kampala in order to play for my country," Omony said.
Omony explained that what he is waiting for FUBA's word. The player added that he would move if "we agree on whether they can pay for my ticket.”
