24th AFCCM (Grand Finale): Primeiro win African title back-back

Primeiro d’Agosto basketball club of Angola Tuesday retained the African title it won last year in Tunisia with an 88-64 points win over fellow Angolan Petro Atletico basketball club in the final of the 2009 edition of the competition.

The Joaquim Gomes inspired Primeiro side won the first two quarters by 19-16 and 22-17 points gaining 8 points advantage going into the break by 41-33 points.
Eduardo Mingas and his Petro Atletico side fought back ferociously at the resumption of hostility in the third quarter but were still beaten the game by a more determined and articulate Primeiro side who also took the quarter by 21-20 points thus extending the lead by one more point of 62-53 points going into the last quarter.

Primeiro continue its search for a second straight title in the last quarter caging the Petro side with every passing second turning into frustration for the 2007 champion with Curtis Terry being sent off by the referee for making uncomplimentary remark after a charge foul was called against him thus putting the Petro under severe pressure losing the quarter by 26-11 points for a cumulative score-line of 88-64 points.

Primeiro Carlos Almeida led the floor with 24 points, Armando Costa recorded 18 points and 4 assists, Joaquim Gomes had a double double of 16 rebounds and 15 points with Ferlizardo Ambrosio adding 11 points and 6 rebounds.

Petro duo of Mario Porter and Eduardo Mingas recorded 18 points, 9 rebounds and 12 points 6 rebounds each for their side.
