NIGERIA : First Deep Water Hosts Africa Female Championship

Fortune may have smiled on Nigeria's reigning basketball club queens, First Deep Water Female Basketball Club of Lagos to make hay on the African scene, as the club, in conjunction with the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF will now host the African Champions Club Cup for women here in Lagos from December 4 to 10 at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The development followed the sudden withdrawal of initial host Cameroon. Speaking in Lagos, Babatunde Babalola, Managing Director of First Deep Water Discovery Ltd, owners of the club, said " our company had to respond to the plea from FIBA-AFRICA to host the championship in view of Cameroon's decline and when they got negative responses from two organisations in Nigeria.
We decided to bail out Africa to host it to demonstrate our commitment to the development of female basket ball in Nigeria and West Africa. By implication, we are giving an assurance to Nigerians that we will do our best, provide the resources so we can host a successful championship that Africans and FIBA-AFRICA will be proud of,"he stressed.
Though the NBBF is the host federation, Babalola pledged that his company would provide the financial support that will make the event fruitful.
While the Nigerian champions continue to train for the event under the watchful eyes of ex-international coaches Lati Erifolarin and Bola Oguanade, they face a tough challenge for the title from a strong field of amazon clubs in the continent such as former champions, First Bank and current cup holders Inter-club and Maculosso, both of Angola, Arc-en-ciel of Congo DR, O.C.E of Algeria, Ports Authority of Kenya, First Bank of Nigeria and I.N.J.S of Cameroon who withdrew from hosting the championship to give First Deep Water the golden chance.
