Lions basketball team began the 2013 KBF Premier League on a positive note after beating debutants Nairobi Aviation 80-66 at the Nyayo Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. This being the first match for the oldest club in Kenya's basketball history to play without the backing of their sponsors Kenya Commercial Bank who withdrew their financial support to the club early this year after decades of consistent partnership.
Four matches scheduled for the past weekend involving USIU vs. Storms, USIU vs. Nakuru Club, Western Delight vs. Shimba Hills, KPA vs. MMUST and Western Delight vs. KPA were rescheduled due to technical reasons.
Lions who were formerly known as KCB Lions were clearly the superior side against the students despite the 1st quarter ending 14-14.
Lions again dominated with a 20-14 win in the second quarter to put the half time scores at 34-25. The ever green Ancent Wafula who was also the Kenya team captain that travelled to Tanzania for the African Cup qualifiers hit 23 points for the Lions followed by James Omune who had 19 points while Aviation's top scorer was Byron Job with 21 points.
Aviation lost the 3rd 22- 29 but pulled themselves up in the final stretch to pin down the Lions with a minor lead of 19-17 but it was too late.
In the Division One matches played on Sunday Equity overcame Trailblazers 57-44 while Umoja beat World Hope 72-58. Parklands Baptist succumbed to KCA-U 34 -51.
