Ulinzi Warriors beat KBF Premier League defending Champions Co-op Bank 51-47 on Saturday evening at the Nyayo gymnasium to register their first win since the 2013 season began.
Ulinzi had lost the 2 matches they had played so far and the win came as huge relief for the Defence Forces side. In a tense 1st quarter Ulinzi managed to draw 1st blood after 3 minutes of play through Mike Tanui when he hit the Bankers with a 3 point shot with Ulinzi eventually winning the quarter with 13 points against Co-op’s 8 points.
The 2nd quarter saw another neck to neck battle but Cary Odhiambo’s side managed to take the quarter with a difference of one point the score being 13-12 to put the half time scores at 25-21 in favor of Ulinzi. In the 3rd quarter both teams upped the tempo in terms of offence but Ulinzi came out on top as they got 18 points while Co-op Bank sunk in 15 points to put the scores at the end of the quarter at 45-36 with Ulinzi still leading.
The last quarter saw Co-op push for a comeback and they took the quarter with 11 points against Ulinzi’s 8 points but it was a little too late and they succumbed to their 2nd defeat in the 2013 season.
Mike Tanui who was instrumental for Ulinzi in the win gave his side 15 points followed by William Ochieng who had 10 points to his name. Allan Ouma was Co-op’s top scorer with 10 points.
