UGANDA : Falcons defiant

Kampala- This is as bad a crisis as Falcons have faced in the past four years. Seventh is not where the record Airtel National Basketball League champions belong if history counts for anything.

Friday was a new low. Falcons looked disinterested in the 84-55 loss to DMark Power at YMCA court. It passed as a practice session for the five-time champions who enjoyed every bit of the Falcons carcass. In a rather defiant post-match interview, Gad Eteu, sees light at the end of the tunnel. “We will be okay,” the coach said. “We are regrouping and rebuilding.” There were few facts to attach to his statement. However, Philip Ameny and Serge Kabangu returned to the team after absconding lately.

Geoff Omondi must have had his feet raised on a couch in a ‘villa’ somewhere having refused to play until team management (read finances) of the club is sorted.
Missing on the night was club president Dennis Mbidde, who sources have blamed for the six-time league champions’ predicament. A section is fighting to get him out and his option is silence.

Henry Ssemanda, one of the club’s administrators, refused to comment on reports of forcing Mbidde out. “I have no comment on that but we are now fine,” Ssemanda, brother to club founder John Ssimbwa (RIP) said.

Stability is something Falcons have not known lately following a player exodus in 2009, a flirt with relegation in 2010 and death of Ssimbwa in 2011. “We are now training consistently,” Eteu added. “I promise you, we will better against UCU (Canons) on Friday.”
