KENYA : Cameroon make easy work of Kenya in Afrobasket

Kenya women basketball team had a false start at the 2013 Afrobasket Championship falling 39-61 to Cameroon in their Group B opening match played in Maputo, Mozambique on Friday.
Cameroon, whose players who had to spend about 18 hours at the JKIA on their way to Maputo on Wednesday after they were denied transit visas, made good their revenge threat by paying back on the court.
The West African team proved superior of their East African counterparts winning all the quarters 18-11, 12-7, 13-12 and 18-9 respectively.
Purity Auma, who plays for Uganda Christian University, top scored for Kenya with ten points in a game that baskets proved hard coming for the Ronnie Owino ladies.
She grabbed eight rebounds and two steals while point guard Samba Mjomba had two assists.
Gani Njiogap scored 12 points for Cameroon. Kenya’s weakness on the offensive was clearly exposed with 21 turnovers against Cameroon’s 14 that unfavorably tilted possession the opponents’ way.
Kenya’s 18 rebounds against Cameroon’s 20 complicated matters further for the Kenyans who will have to re-strategize before their next match.
At the free-throw line, Kenya was stronger than Cameroon scoring seven out of the possible nine while Cameroon scored nine out of the possible fourteen.
Kenya did not score any three-pointer from eight attempts while Cameroon scored six out of thirteen attempts.
In the other matches of the group, Mali beat Cape Verde 73-62 while Angola labored to a 60-46 win over Nigeria. Egypt lost 69-100 to Senegal.
