KENYA : Shimba Charged

MOMBASA region's Shimba Hills yesterday continued to stamp their authority in the girls' basketball after beating Northern Eastern representatives Kirigara 111-15 in the Term One national games.
This was the second preliminary win for Shimba Hills after they beat Tigoi Girls, who are making a comeback in the games 68-25 in the opening match.
The hosts attracted hundreds of fans who cheered them as Beryl Akoth led Shimba troops against Kirigara right from the whistle in the Pool 'B' game.
Akoth, who bagged 23 points, steered Shimba to sweeping all the four quarters, recording 35-03, 22-05, 29-02 and 25-05 respectively against their opponents who had Elsie Kabose as their highest scorer with five points.
The home team featured Akoth alongside Esther Mwashumbe, Maryanne Aloo, Everlyne Oketch, Lilian Atieno, Elsa Anyango, Carol Atieno, Christine Akinyi and Lilian Mboga.
In another Pool 'B' match, Tigoi downed Moi Girls, beating them 60-40 at the same venue. Tigoi posted 12-9 in the first quarter but lost the second 08-11. They however returned forcefully in the fourth and fifth quarter, where they posted 21-06 and 18-14 respectively.
Tigoi were steered to victory by Daisy Ayodi and Lavenda Adhiambo who bagged 17 and 14 points respectively in the game that also featured Natome Anthony, Tracy Kadesa, Samba Babra and Anne Akinyi. Moi Girls thrashed Kirigara 60-16 in their opening match with Bilha Cherono bagging 11 points.
In the boys category, Metropolitan champions Upper Hill proved their supremacy in the game, beating Abadares' representatives Mangu 64-46 at the same venue.
On their way to victory, Upper Hill had started off on a good note beating Nakuru region's Kirobon 77-25 in their opening match on Tuesday afternoon.
Before meeting their match, Mangu had towered against Eastern's Kangaru, dismissing them 53-31.
In the second match, Kirobon edged out Kangaru 91-45 registering victory in all the four quarters after getting 22-09, 23-08, 26-16 and 20-12 respectively.
Technically, Kangaru are out of the race in the boys category after losing two matches while in the girls category, it is the end of the road for Kirigara.
