UGANDA : Power eject KIU as Falcons, UCU Canons measure up

KAMPALA. Tiger Head Power became the first men’s team to qualify for the semi finals of this year’s national basketball league playoffs after sweeping KIU Titans 2-0 on Sunday.
That hardly tells the whole story though. The five time champions required triple overtime to dispatch a determined university side 101-95 at the Lugogo MTN Arena.
Led by Michael Makiadi who scored nine of his season high 29 points and 18 rebounds in the first quarter, the Titans edged the first two quarters 16-15 and 20-15.
“We did not deserve to lose but that is what you get when your guards fail to control the game,” Titans coach Henry Mwinuka mumbled after the game.
Power responded by claiming the third 22-12 before regular time ended 67-all. First Makiadi saved the sixth seeded Titans as the first overtime period finished 10 apiece while Francis Sokoroza (21 points)’s three pointer at the death tied the game at 89 each going into the third period. As Chris Omanye 16 points and Makiadi fouled out, KIU wilted to hand Power, with six players in double figures led by Joseph Ikong (24 points), Paul Mwaka (19 and 10 rebounds) victory.
In the Ladies games, Magic Stormers also progressed to the semifinals after sweeping Nkumba Lady Marines 59-40 in their second game.
Today, Falcons can eject UCU Canons at the quarterfinal stage for the second season running with victory in their second game at YMCA.
Flacons lead the best of three series 1-0 after Friday’s 67- 63 victory.
