KENYA : KPA, Ulinzi all-Square in playoffs final


Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Ulinzi Warriors are tied at one game each as the Kenya Basketball Federation men premier league playoffs final began on Wednesday at the Safaricom Indoor Arena, Kasarani.
KPA won game one 68-67 after staging a swift comeback in the second half. Ulinzi had taken full command of the game for the entire of first half winning 21-15 in first quarter and 19-16 in the second.
Costly turnovers and fouls in third quarter gifted KPA possession and they seized the opportunity to stage a coup.
A 23-12 win in the quarter gave KPA full control of the game and managed to hold off the soldiers’ challenge in the fourth.
They lost 14-15 with Martin Gitonga top scoring for KPA with 19 points. Ancette Wafula scored 18 points for Ulinzi and William Ochieng added 13.
Wafula, Bernard Mufutu and Antonia Bwire had a good outing for the soldiers while Samuel Ocholla, Tobias Onyango and Alex Lugasi starred for KPA.
In game two, Ulinzi started off in similar fashion dominating first half and extended the good show in second half to win 70-57.
Ancette Wafula was the player of the moment again calling the early shots for Ulinzi with on-point three and jump shots. Ulinzi won first quarter 16-12 and second 15-11.
The soldiers won third quarter 18-10 to stretch their lead to 16 points and not even KPAs 24-21 win in the fourth could deny them the vital win. Wafula scored 23 points for Ulinzi with Ariel Okal top scoring for KPA with 12 points.
Odendo back for Ulinzi 
Ulinzi will be strengthened in game three with the return of Victor Odendo who sat out the first two games suspended.
The winner could be known as early as Saturday but the competitive nature of the opening games could push the series to Sunday.
In division one, Zetech University is just a win away from being declared champions.
They lead their series 2-0 against Umoja and will be crowned on Friday if they remain consistent and win game three.
For Umoja, they have a mountain to climb and must win the remaining three games to become champions.
Zetech won game one 71-62 in a comeback victory after trailing 28-37 at the breather. Umoja won the first two quarters 15-9 and 22-19 but Zetech gave back in kind with a dominant 21-9 win in the third quarter and 22-16 in the fourth.
Raymond Momanyi and Joshua Kisali scored a combined 29 points for Zetech while Marvin Freeman was Umoja’s top scorer with 15 points.
Game two was an equally tall order for Umoja who lost 72-86 after trailing 41-45 at halftime. Jeremy Opiyo scored 18 points for Zetech and Rodgers Ombati had 22 for Umoja.
Winners of the series will pocket Ksh.400, 000 and runner-up Ksh. 200, 000 as part of the sponsorship package from Top Fry. Most valuable player in men premier league will pocket Ksh. 50, 000 and Ksh. 25, 000 for division one’s MVP.
