TANZANIA : Stone Town, African Magic Win Zanzibar Basketball Titles


Zanzibar — StoneTown were crowned new men's basketball champions of Unguja Zone after overcoming Polisi 73-68 as the championship reached its climax at Maisara court on Saturday evening.
African Magic won the women's league with JKU settling in second place. The closely-battled final encounter that kicked off at 4pm attracted a sizeable crowd that was treated to a rousing show, as both sides tried their best to emerge victorious.
Polisi, who were the defending champions, however, could not match their usual prowess in the closing game against a spirited Stone Town team.
The game was graced by Kikwajuni's Representative Mahmoud Mussa, who presented the winners with awards. Also awarded were the best and most disciplined players. Champions Stone Town demonstrated their quest for the trophy from the first whistle.
They took a massive 24-14 lead after the opening quarter and went for the breather leading 42-35. Stone Town maintained their lead in the third quarter which finished 62-49 in their favour.
Abdallah Ramadhan led Stone Town's assault after notching 20 points, while Said Marine contributed 19 with Juma Mbae also managing double digits after scoring 14 points.
Abbas Muhidin was Polisi's and the game's top scorer with 27 points as Saleh Abbas scored 18. Rangers finished second in the men's category.
Stone Town's Ramadhani and Aisha Ahmed of African Magic were voted best players of the tournament and the most disciplined player award went to Abdulwahab Maj-ham of Mbuyuni.
They were presented with trophies and 30,000/- each. The winners in both categories were awarded a trophy and 200,000/-, while the runners-up got a trophy and 100,000/-.
The league brought together 14 teams. Four teams in each category qualified for the Zanzibar league. The men's teams are Stone Town, Rangers, Polisi and Nyuki and women's sides are African Magic, JKU, Mafunzo and New West.
